#TipTuesday Smoke Alarm Safety

The National Fire Protection Association is celebrating Fire Prevention Week this October to ensure the safety of your home and business. The theme for this week is “Don’t wait, check the date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years!” In collaboration with the NFPA, ServiceMaster by Gilmore is sharing their tips on how to keep you safe and teach you proper care for fire alarms.

Smoke Alarms have become standards in our homes and businesses, we hardly pay any attention to them. However, these small devices will help keep you safe in the event of a fire. Be sure to walk around your home or office with this check list:

– Every room has a smoke alarm on the wall or ceiling.

– Check all alarms every month by pressing the test button on the surface.

– An alarm that is working correctly will produce a high pitched sound.

– Faulty alarms will continuously beep or make no noise at all. If you find a faulty alarm, remove it and check the back for the manufacture date. If it is older than 10 years, it will need to be replaced.

By keeping up to date with your alarms, you can evacuate the building more quickly and possibly limit the damage to your property by notifying the fire department sooner.
