BARBEQUE SAFETY

Summer is Barbeque season.  The Insurance Information Institute reports backyard barbeques are responsible for as many as 2000 fires and 3 deaths annually.  Before you fire up the grill, take a few minutes to insure that your grilling experience is a safe and happy one.

Gas Grills

Make sure hoses are firmly attached & checked for cracks, leaks & blockages. Clean out the line that leads to the burner.  Remove food waste/spiders. Spot leaks by applying soapy water to the connections and briefly turning on the gas.        Bubbles will form if a leak exists. Fix all leaks before operating the grill. Check propane tanks for dents or punctures before filling.  Do not overfill. Never use a cylinder more than 10 years old.

Charcoal Grills

Use starter fluid sparingly.  NEVER SPRAY ON OPEN FLAME. Keep all grills at least 10 feet away from house/shrubs. Always have a fire extinguisher handy. Make sure the wind is blowing away from you when grilling. Use long handled cooking utensils. Don’t wear loose fitting clothing while cooking. Never leave your grill unattended. Take special care for children and pets.
